While looking at other things, I noticed a couple of dragonflies circling a small, stagnant pond. I moved over to the pond and set up my camera and tripod and waited. This dragonfly accommodated by landing on a small piece of broken cane jutting out from the banks of the pond. Motionless, the dragonfly simply sat there as if posing for pictures. I shot several frames and chose this one as the most representative. The image was shot at the LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve near St Charles, Illinois in Kane County.

This dragonfly is a male of the species Libellula pulchella most commonly known as a Twelve-spotted Skimmer. The distinctive white spots along with the black spots which give it its name identify this dragonfly as male.

I processed the raw file using Photomatix Pro 5 and Detail 3 from Topaz Labs to produce this hdr image.
