On a beautiful Summer morning I was out on the prairie near my home in Kane County, Illinois looking for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars on the resident milkweeds all across this restored ecosystem. Finding none, I instead found any number of ripening milkweed seed pods which caught my interest. During that morning, I photographed about a dozen different examples of these exquisitely yet subtly colored pods. Often when photographing nature I think about what the image would look like if I were using a medium format camera with a square format.

I cropped the original image into the square format and then processed the resulting tiff file using Photomatix Pro 5 and I used Detail 3 from Topaz Labs to create this hdr image.

Images are available in matted, framed, canvas or mounted formats as well as greeting cards and posters at truly extraordinary pricing. Just click the Prints, Posters or Cards tab to explore all the formats available. The sample below is a framed print with a walnut frame and a black matte.
