Valentine's Memories

I woke with a start as the radio came to life loudly with a love song. Ug it’s “Wet, wet, wet’s, Love is all around” I hate that one now. I quickly turned it off with a thump.
I showered and dressed with the house in silence. I came into the bedroom to make the bed and found a single red Rose petal on it. As I made the big lonely bed I wondered where it had come from as I didn’t have any Roses in the house.
During breakfast I had a text from a friend wishing me a happy valentines day. With a pang I realised that it is February 14th and our 16th wedding anniversary or what would have been. It was my first time alone on this date in nearly 20 years. I had lost her 2 months ago; she had slipped away from me on the day after her birthday.
I took the bus to work not looking at all the flowers people were holding nor at them opening their cards with big smiles on their faces. I had none to open and none to give, not any flowers in my hands.
I got off the bus and walked to work noticing some more Rose petals on the ground as I went. I wondered if someone had lost them from their Roses. As I slipped into my office I noticed all the smiles, cards and flowers all over the office. As I went to sit in my chair I found some yellow petals on it. I smiled at this as I remembered she had loved yellow Roses. As the stems were green she said they reminded her of when and where we had met. We’d met at MAYC’s last London Weekend to be held in the capital city. We had been sitting next to each other in the Royal Albert Hall for the show on the Saturday night. She had green and yellow ribbons in her long hair. I had dyed mine in stripes. She had looked at me and burst out laughing as she looked closely at my face which was also green and yellow only with a yellow background with green spots. I grinned at her and introduced myself. As I said my name she looked surprised. I asked her why and she had replied that she had wished for someone with my name as it was her favourite.
I was puzzled at that but I didn’t ask her what she had meant by it. Instead I asked her what her name was. She stuck out her hand and said “pleased to meet you Skye, I’m Arianwen”. I gasped at her and said “Oh you too?” She asked what I meant by that. I told her my parents were hippies and thought hers were as well. She laughed at that but said “No my parents are Welsh and my name is too. It means silver and blessed”. I mumbled that I was blessed to have met her. There had been no more time then as the show started.
Afterwards we found out we were staying not too far from each other and travelled on the same tube back to our digs together in Hounslow. The rest of the weekend we kept bumping into each other. When it came to the end of the weekend and time to throw our pom-poms with addresses on them in Trafalgar Square we didn’t, we just swapped with each other. And the rest as they say is history. We fell deeply` in love and were married 4years later with a green and yellow themed wedding. We went on to have 16yrs of happiness together but sadly no children.
She always gave me red Roses on our anniversaries and I gave her yellow ones except for the one’s in May last year she gave me the yellow ones too.
I went through the motions of the day, I’m sure everyone noticed that I didn’t join in at lunchtime I couldn’t face it. They still don’t know about my wife I haven’t told anyone here about my loss yet. I wouldn’t be able to cope with all there sympathy.
On the walk back to the bus stop this evening I found more petals on the ground, red and yellow ones. I got home to find more on the doorstep and inside I found more in front of Arianwen’s photo. I suddenly twigged what was going on, she was sending me the petals to let me know that she was still with me on our day. I smiled at her photo and whispered “Thank you I love you too darling”.
