Artist's Description

The Chuck Taylor All-Star Tennis Shoe was introduced in 1917 and changed the face of sports footwear for generations. They are still popular today and remain relatively unchanged although their country of production is different. These are a pair of my old beat up “Chucks” that just beckoned to be painted. I was going to up the values of the shoes a touch in this composition but I kind of liked the subtle glow that was achieved by keeping the shoes lighter so I left it in its current state. The piece is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The Rublev paint adds nice texture when repeatedly glazed. The original is 14″ × 10″ in size.

Featured in Painters in Modern Times group in August 2009.
