Artist's Description

Apatosaurus, most famous of the sauropods, has a fascinating place in the history of paleontology. Once thought to be a seperate species known as Brontosaurus, it was later discovered that the skeleton of the “brontosaurus” was really a misassembled group of apatosaur and camarasaur fossils. Othniel Charles Marsh, discoverer of a more complete skeleton, therefore, won the right to name this new species. He dubbed it Apatosaurus, meaning ‘deceptive lizard’. (Named so not because of the brontosaurus rivalry, but due to a misleading set of bones in the skeleton that looked more akin to aquatic reptiles.)
Whether called Apatosaurs, Brontosaurs, or just “long necks”, the Apatosaurus is one of the most iconic dinosaur species, and among the first to be learned and loved by every dino-loving child.
