Artist's Description

The Zodical Light is a glow that is visible just above the horizon at the point where the sun set about 1-2hrs after sunset (note it is not light scattered through the atmosphere). It is caused by reflection of the sun’s light off gas and dust particles in space that are in the same plane as the solar system (ie. the plane or rotation of the planets). Since the sun follows a path through the signs of the zodiac throughout a year, this glow always appears in signs of the zodiac (the ecliptic), hence it’s name.
This photo is a 5 minute exposure and was shot at Stoke’s Bay, Kangaroo Island. Venus can be seen just above the horizon.
