Collar Colour

This is not about colour
It’s about COLLAR
White Collar
STARCHED…
PRESSED…
CRISP…
CLEAN…
The illusion of perfection
Of someone else’s scheme
The seductive..unconstructive..tempting
Soul-emptying
Noose of “SUCCESS”
I wrapped around my life
Until…
I was nearly lifeless..

The strangulation of the self
To fit in with the other toy robots on the shelf
To cast the dye
Fast and furious
Prove that I was “serious”
Professional..
Educated..
A “go getter”
Better than all the other toys…

My power hair
PERFECT
My power suits
On sale
For sale
And I didn’t even know it…

“Yes Sir..No Sir”
The mantra of inequity
That greased it’s way
Into my vocabulary
SHOUTED gladly from every pore
For the little girl from the “small town”
Had risen to her own high powered office
With a complimentary high-handed view
Askew

Barely did she notice how the exciting
Tightening..siphoning…smiting rope
Climbed up her spine..
Strangulating
The suddenly trifling
Ambitions of old:
To help..
To give..
To write..
To LIVE…
A life of truth
Untainted ..
By my painted face

Replaced..encased by a corporate cocoon
Of false comfort and ideal
Exclusion of the real
I thought it felt good
It sure did look good

So willingly
I wandered away
From me
And dove happily
Into an abyss
Of madness..sadness..gladness
Madness
That would elevate and then negate
My self-esteem
My self-respect
My self-worth
Me….

Until I couldn’t breathe anymore
And my beautiful skin
Once alive and bright
Sallowed..
By the days…nights
And the shallow vision
Of my reflection
The imperfection rang
Loudly in my face
This is not YOUR place

“Come back to me”, she said
And she unwound the tight bun
On my head
And the tighter frown
On my face
And fed me
The nectar of my soul
The Golden Song of the spoken word
True…
Real…
Pure…
Unobscure everywhere

I felt the steam of passion
Misting..
Flowing…
Rising…
As I returned to my pages written
My friends.. smitten
Once hidden away
Now laid before me
“Welcome”, they whispered
“THIS is who you are”

And now my neck wears a different hue
Of Orange…Pink…Purple…and dew
Uncollared…
Unleashed…
Freed…
ME!!!!!!
