Shades of Black

I wiped the dust with my bare hands today
Off old cd cases and photo albums
It is strange to think of how many fibers
And particles have made their home
On top of my memories
Keeping them more company that I ever could

He says that I block out my
Ability to flourish so that
I cannot taste the possibility
Of having and losing
That I keep myself consistently
Below the surface
Always with distance between my
Heart and anything that could give it
Reason to pulse in cadence with the
Speed in which I run

But does he know about the erosion of self?
About the pieces of worth that have fallen
Off the sides of mountains built of loss
Hidden by the flowers that have been fed by
The need to keep myself intact

I read something once
That even beautiful plants can grow
In the dark….
Maybe some people are just meant to
Stay out of the light
And collect dust like pictures do
Maybe we were supposed to not see
The things that bring our knees
To the ground again and again…….
