Artist's Description

Crystals of ice formed on a mossy log near the east shore of Derwentwater in the English Lake District (Cumbria). Scientifically this is an example of sublimation from vapour to solid phase without passing through the intermediate liquid phase – but it still looks just as pretty. Not far away, near Cockermouth towards the end of the 18th century, John Dalton made observations of the behaviour of water in all of its phases that helped him to formulate his particle theory of matter, eventually leading to his atomic theory of valency and chemical combination that gave birth to modern Chemistry.
