Gifts From the Heart

Gifts from the heart are very easy to come by. Likewise, they are simple to give. They could be as effortless as a wide, tooth grinning smile, a warm embrace, a friendly gesture, a good deed, the words, “I love you,” etc. In addition, they could be something that we made by hand, especially with a particular person in mind. I consider the truest gifts from the heart as those which are either created by the gift giver and/or by Mother Nature herself. In my lifetime, such gifts as these have been the most valuable, meaningful and rewarding gifts I could ever receive and/or give. In my opinion, it is better to give than to receive. Such a tender and wonderful feeling I get, from the reactions of my recipients!

Touchstones were my first introduction to receiving special gifts from the heart. My late Father, Henry Wilson Peacock, gave me my first touchstone when I was about eleven years old. A touchstone is a smooth, small rock with an indentation in it. The indentation is meant to fit a person’s thumb. Touchstones are intended to be carried in your pocket. When tough times come, touchstones can help relieve tension, by simply rubbing them with your thumb. They are meant to remind you of the person who gave it to you; symbolic that you are special, cared for and loved.

Before too long, I collected touchstone after touchstone. Great joy came from sharing them with those that I loved, after my Dad taught me their true meaning. Out of curiosity, I looked up touchstone in the dictionary and the definition that fits the best is as follows: “A fundamental or quintessential part or feature.” The touchstones that I have had in my life had that fundamental/quintessential indentation. Rubbing a touchstone in my pocket was and still is soothing to my soul.

Many years ago, I discovered the natural beauty of heart shaped stones, usually embedded in the ground. When you buy a new car, or even decide on a car model that you want to buy, have you ever noticed how all of a sudden you begin to see that car everywhere? Finding heart shape rocks is very similar. Once I am focused on heart shapes, I almost always find them. Heart shaped rocks are everywhere…The best part is that heart shaped rocks always have a perfect thumb indentation. Of course, it then becomes a touchstone heart. I’ve found so much joy in giving my newly found hearts to people that I love and care for.

Before too long, after discovering touchstone hearts, I soon found myself filing and sanding stones that had the potential to be a touchstone heart. Great joy combined with enlightening meditation ensued as I worked on them for hours and hours. Love as well as curiosity, fill me as I work on them. Why curiosity? I’ve always wondered whether I am possibly the first human to ever touch this particular stone. Also, as I sand and file away, new patterns embedded in the stone begin to emerge. They are Mother Nature’s fascinating, geological works of art. That, right there, makes me think of the many, many years of how they were formed and shaped, often due to severe weather. God only knows how old they are.

When I wear a piece of clothing that someone has given me, I may or may not think about that person when I first put it on. If I do think of them, as the day goes on, I most likely forget about them and the clothes that I am wearing, unless someone compliments me.

However, every time I reach into my pocket and feel that touchstone or any other token of love and/or friendship; I experience a pleasurable sensation for the thoughtfulness in which it was given. Gifts from the heart are treasures that money cannot possibly buy. In my opinion, there is no substitute.

Money can buy gifts of love and friendship, but it’s not nearly as endearing or sentimental. That is the simple beauty of giving gifts from the heart. Mother Nature lovingly gives us an ample supply of genuine wonders. They are there for the taking, so long as you actively seek them. Each touchstone heart that I have found as is or modified, is totally unique, just like you!

If only we could all live for today with a reminder that it’s quite possible that our tomorrow may never come. Our world, as we know it now, would certainly be different. Gifts from the heart are a remembrance to live, love, learn and enjoy our lives together, while appreciating every single moment we have on Planet Earth. Every day is a precious gift, but only you can determine what is inside of your individually wrapped package!

Stone Age men collected perfectly formed pebbles, which to them added supernatural qualities and were held as sacred. These were seen as symbols of eternal life.

We are born into a life, which has its own meaning and we should not separate the fact of our existence from the beauty which surrounds and envelopes our being with each forward step.
