Artist's Description

Catalina Island’s misty sunrise, located 26 miles west of Los Angeles, California was absolutely stunning as I photographed it from the upper level of a cruise ship. Villager’s must have been sleeping in, as the road in the photograph is practically barren. Quite Intriguing, Catalina Island is full of history. Island Inhabitant’s are known to go back as far as 7,000 years ago. Spain discovered Catalina Island in 1542 and named it Saint Catalina Island after Saint Catherine, which it is sometimes still called. During the 1880’s Smugglers stored their booty here, while trading illegal goods up and down the Pacific Coast. Over 500 movies have been filmed here, starting with silent films in 1911. In the early 1920’s Bison was brought to the island, which made it the perfect backdrop for shooting western movies. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, notable Big Bands played Swing Music at the Avalon Casino. The Avalon Casino averaged about 4,000 people dancing the night away per night, for a whopping 28 years. Today Catalina Island is as beautiful as ever. Tourists still flock here on a regular basis! This photograph was taken with a Canon XTI as is.
