Artist's Description

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA is largely Amish. Their culture fascinates me, since they live as we would have lived back in the 1800’s before trains, planes and automobiles. Riding on her scooter, next to summer corn crops, this little girl seemed deep in thought. I have to wonder what she was thinking about. The Amish believe that photographs in which they can be recognized violate the Biblical commandment, “Thou shalt not make unto thyself a graven image.” They want to be remembered by the lives they lived and the examples they left, not by physical appearance. For this reason, I will only take a shot from a far distance and also when they are not looking at me, out of respect for their beliefs.

This photograph was shot in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA with a Canon 40D, equipped with a 75-300mm zoom lens and has been modified with a watercolor effect in order to lesson the clarity of her image.
