The Things You Taught

Twenty-five years it took me
Twenty-five years and twenty-five trips
around this glowing sun
it took me to find out
that I was the inconvenient son.

I must admit you taught me a lot
You taught me to use deceit
to escape uncertainty & fear
You taught me to use my words
but only to mold, twist and control
You taught me to mistrust by showing me
it was those closest to you
who would hurt you the worst
just in the name of
preserving themselves.

It was you two who taught me to hate
and it was you two who showed me
the dark depths of loneliness
and it was you two who instilled me
with the same feeling of neglect
and abandonment that echoes
through these crumbling structures
I call my real home.

I loathe nearly every gene
every G.
every A.
every T.
and every C.
that you bestowed upon me
except maybe those i chose consciously
and daily, defy the conventions
that you inadvertently taught

Because my twenty-five short trips
have taught me things too.

The world has taught me to love
despite circumstance
The world has taught me to trust
if only in my own ability to survive
The world has taught me to create
to spread my thoughts
The world has taught me to value
that which i have and that which i choose

This world has taught me
all the things you should have
so, in a sense…
Thank You

For introducing me to the world,
… and very little more.
