Simple Care

His hands move steadily
Like with the years has been a garnering of care
Gracing each finger in thoughtfulness

Opening an envelope
Unfolding a letter
My eye follows these movements
As all the time in the world is given to a simple task

I am humbled
As if witnessing something sacred
The atmosphere holding a quality
That is patient and serene

How many seasons must pass
Before we feel the grace of forgiveness
Before we can move with a flow
That respects the moment, that cares for all things

The wisdom of age, the tree whose roots run deep
Whose leaves come and go like children born and reared
Nestling deeper into the earth and reaching higher into the heavens

The letter complete, one hand removes a pair of reading glasses
Placing them gently on a table where a warm tea cup sits
The other hand resting on a knee, outstretched and considerate

Thoughts gather that bring a sense of completeness
And his hands prepare for their next movement
Unrushed and with care

Simple care

Artist's Description

I wrote this piece about a person I first met years ago. Straight away he made a deep impression on me through the simple care he showed in all things …
