Beneath the surface

A word
Spoken in innocence
Yet something stirs

A phrase
Uttered casually
Yet something rises

Beneath the layers finely pressed and presentable
Lives a tide of emotion
Hardly breathing lest the winds set in

Almost forgotten but for an accidental trigger
A hint of splintered memory
Spilling rays of remembering across a shadowed heart

What story lies hidden
Aching to be told

What jewels can be found from the depths
What discoveries from riding the voiceless waves of the heart

That rise and fall
That fall and rise

That tremble and break
To finally settle and linger on calm shores

Revealing a hurt, half in shadow
Shy at first, coloured by shame

Each deeper look a journey of trust
Each nuance of understanding
A lesson in compassion

And then the sun curling her warmth into the complexity
of that which has tunnelled within like an industrious ant

Building civilisations out of a crumb
Separated from the grace of wholeness

Falling and falling

Till the moment of questioning
Till realisation disturbs the sleep
And awareness rises like a newly lit flame

Miraculously a story unfolds
Releasing distorted shapes of the night

And the frightened child beneath the surface
At last emerging begins to play once more

Beneath the surface
