Live Your Life Like a Dog

Hmmm, what does that mean? It means to live every moment now. Don’t worry about what happened yesterday, it’s past and you cant’ change it. Dogs don’t hold grudges, well, at least most of them don’t. Let’s not dwell on the minority of dogs that seem to reason and return to the point. Dogs can’t tell time, have no concept of time and if you could it explain it to them they would think you were nuts. What good is time? You can’t eat it. You can chase it but what do you do if you catch it?
Dogs have no concept of future. Why worry about something that hasn’t happened yet and might not happen? If it’s something bad and you can change it now, then do so and stop worrying about it. If it’s something you can’t change then accept it and let it go.
Dogs greet every day with joy, tail wagging, tongue panting, eyes lit up with excitement. Imagine walking into your office and your co-workers all greet you with a smile of genuine joy to see you. Wouldn’t you feel joy as well and smile in return? Can you look at a charismatic dog with his laughing eyes and silly antics and not smile? Some of my Boykin spaniels will lie down and thrust their hind legs out behind them and drag themselves by their front legs across the grass, stubby tail wagging and all but laughing out loud with an open mouth and twinkling eyes. That is pure and simple joy at being alive.
Some dogs will race around the house or yard with exuberance at being alive and seeing you again. They’ll leap into the air, sometimes actually doing flips with so much energy that they can’t contain themselves. It doesn’t matter if you have been gone two hours or two days, it’s all the same in doggy time.
As close as humans come to this openness is in children who haven’t been conditioned to show restraint. An adult will tell them to ‘settle down’ and behave. If an adult greets you with such abandon you may think them simple or mentally unstable. Imagine if you will the world with everyone living for the moment. There would be no grudges, no depression, no wars. Sure there may be a short squabble over a mate or food but it would just as soon be forgotten once resolved.
Try it for one day. If you catch yourself worrying about the future or the past, bring yourself back to this moment. Right now, life is good. Smile. Jump for joy. Now, doesn’t that feel great? Good girl!
