Artist's Description

Kowloon’s bird market is an extremely peculiar place. Hordes of bird enthusiasts congregate in the narrow streets of Mong Kok yet don’t appear to ‘show’ their birds so much as just tend to them at the roadside. Considering this is a city that not so long back was gripped in bird flu fear, this is a bizarre sight to behold. While numerous tourists and enthusiastic photographers seemed to want to capture close ups of the incarcerated creatures, I wandered around to take a more ‘behind the scenes’ look at the intricate care taken to ‘looking after’ the birds in their numerous cages. Despite the indisputable cruelty (from a personal perspective, at least), it was none-the-less intriguing to see the role that markets like this play in Chinese culture.
