FOLK CONCERT – NORWAY

A woman is playing a fiddle inlaid with mother of pearl.
She holds her body as if it were made of fine crystal.
The fiddle pours out music, but she barely moves,
barely breathes.
Her gown is black and earthen gray.
It contains a great, soft mystery.
She plays again, an old wooden Swedish instrument
covered with levers and countless strings.
Rich tones pour into a part of my soul
that has always hidden in deep forests,
that moves in silence like the hunger of wolves.
