IF NIGHT HAMMERS DOWN

If stars fell like nails to shatter humankind
and shred sky like dirty linen,
would our prayers still reach
the innocent heart beyond all hearts?
Would You still listen and touch souls
from the inside with delicate fingers?
I wonder who really says things as they are?
Is it the silent ones? Is it the trees, or stones,
or a muni sage, or motionless crystals?
These mimic you, Creator of everything,
who whistles silence in between our every breath,
who listens in the spaces between each thought.
You give us freedom. That seems clear enough… but why?
Could it be that a great Freedom can only breed freedom,
and this is Love… even if we suffer what selfish souls make;
even if we witness a final retribution as ignorant dark
draws destruction on itself with chords of arrogant presumptions
and a demonic suppression of freedom;
even if Light seems to sleep, as night hammers down
like iron falling on flowers.
