Artist's Description

A tall coarse plant, with large white or pink flowers, 5-lobed, musky smelling, usually borne singly on short stalks.
The flowers are 4-7 inches wide, stamens numerous, forming a column around style, with anthers outside. There are 5 style branches and stigmas protruding from the end of stamen column, with narrow green, leaf-like bracts beneath the calyx.
Leaves are about 4 inches long, ovate, toothed or lobed, pointed white downy beneath.
The fruit is a many seeded capsule. This plant flowers from July through September in tidal marshes, and inland freshwater marshes.
Its range is Ontario; Massachusetts and Pennsylvania south to Florida, west through Kansas, to Mexico, northeast to Kansas, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
