The Willow

Once upon a time,
While lying on my pillow,
I heard a scratching on the house,
It was the outside willow.

It Scratched again,
And scratched some more,
And then a scratch,
Upon my door.

I took a breath,
(A frightened one)
And waited for the morning sun.

Again that scratching,
On my door,
And then again,
And then once more.

Slowly… very slowly,
My feet,
They touched the floor.
I placed my hand,
Upon the knob,
And then upon the door.

I slowly turned it,
West to East.
It creaked and cracked,
The lock released.

And what was behind,
The door out there?
T’was nothing,
But the cold night air.

I lay back down,
Upon my pillow…
And heard the scratching,
Of the willow.

Artist's Description

I love to read and watch scary stuff, especially if it has a twist. Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Hitchcock did it right and made an impact on me as a teen. These days some movies depend so much on violence for the good scare when the imagination is better than any theatrical blood or gore. :D
