The yam warehouse in the Central Market and an earnest negotiation.
The wholesale market for produce and other foods was in “El Centro” Mexico City. The population of Mexico City was about 12 million people. The produce from the rural areas was shipped and distributed to warehouse in this area and then the traveling markets would pick up their goods here and travel to different neighborhoods every day and set up a street market. Where I lived Market Day was Tuesday and we would be woken up early by the sound of the vendors setting up in the street outside our apartment. The street was closed and the market went on for 4 or 5 blocks, produce, meat, fish, spices, even live chickens, it was all there. My job was to accompany our house keeper/ cook/nanny for my son to the market. She would visit the different vendors, pick over the vegetables and bargain for the best price, when she was satisfied she would tell me the price, show me the tomatoes or whatever and wait for me to approve. Of course I always approved and pulled out the money needed and gave it to her. I did share in carrying the bags. We did the majority of our shoppinmg at this market. She never wrote anything down, carried no list but it always worked out perfectly and she was a wonderful cook.

I love this image. The story going on here… a well dressed business man negotiating with (what appears to be ) a woman; workers busy in the background, hovering over huge sacks of yams; and the environment- something out of another world, for me.
Thank You Frannie, yes it is a woman. I always appreciate your thoughtful comments and insight. tony
