The original Grindle Point light was established in 1851 built of three acres of land purchased from Francis Grindle who became the second keeper in 1853. The tower was rebuilt in 1874 after succumbing to the elements. The light was deactivated in 1934 with the grounds and the lighthouse becoming property of the town of Islesboro. In 1987 residents convinced the US Coast Guard to recommission the lighthouse. (Source: The Village Soup publication – Discovering Maine’s Lighthouses and Harbors – Summer 2011)
