Artist's Description

My mom has Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She is a strong, independent, and amazing woman. Recently Mom was partnered with Leibell; a beautiful, Black Lab Service Dog. This bond was made possible by the organization NEADS/ Dogs for Deaf & Disabled Americans.

NEADS is a non-profit organization located in Princeton, MA. Established in 1976, NEADS has been bringing a new life to people through their canine training since 1976.

NEADS trains canine assistants, through their Prison Pup Partnership with 15 Massachusetts correction facilities, to provide independence for those who are deaf or physically challenged. The types of dogs trained are: hearing, service, social, specialty, service dogs for the classroom, ministry, therapy, and walker dogs. These highly trained dogs become an extension of their humans. They bring security, freedom, independence, and relief from social isolation to people who may not have these basic needs in their lives.

NEADS is the oldest, continuing hearing dog program in the county as well as being the only program of its kind in New England, and one of the largest in the country.

Thus far NEADS has trained more than 1,300 assistance dog teams. All breeds and mixed breeds are trained but tend to be Golden and Labrador Retrievers. Hearing dogs are usually rescued from shelters throughout New England while most service dogs are donated as puppies by breeders all over the country. Any dog “with the right stuff” can be a human’s partner.

People who are paired up with assistance dogs spend two weeks at the NEADS’ fully accessible residence. During this time humans and dogs learn to work together in developing the strong bond needed for a good working relationship. Through the close supervision of the NEADS trainers, clients learn how to work with their dogs to the maximum potential.

NEADS receives no government funding so the clients pay for their dogs and equipment through fundraising while NEADS helps raise sponsorship for each person.
