Artist's Description

In Paiute legend, during times of hardship and famine, Native mothers drowned their babies in order to spare them the agonizing pain of starvation. The spirits of these uncompleted lives inhabit these waters, preying upon children who venture into the deep.

  • These legends are probably cautionary tales intended to frighten children to keep them from going into the water unattended._
