Artist's Description

The coal ship “Japan Platanus”, laden with steaming coal, being escorted from Newcastle Harbour on the 16th November 2008. Its not until you see these ships at this angle that you realise how broad their beam is and how low they sit in the water. The export capacity of these cape class ships are handicapped by the bar depth (rock ledge) just offshore from Nobbys but when fully loaded they each can easily carry over 180,000 tonnes of coal. Around 1,000 ships are loaded in Newcastle Harbour each calendar year.
