Artist's Description

Calshot Castle stands on the end of a long coastal spit at the mouth of Southampton Water. Its strategic value was that from it you can not only see north-west up Southampton Water and east along the branch of the Solent that passes Portsmouth, but also south across the other branch of the Solent towards Cowes and the Isle of Wight. The beach below it therefore provides a grandstand view of Southampton’s present shipping, including many of the world’s great passenger liners. Watching one of these is like having a huge modern hotel pass before you, but some are more elegant than others!

Southampton is still the home port for Cunard’s beautiful ships, and it is also where the world-famous line has its headquarters. First there was the Queen Mary, followed by the Queen Elizabeth. Then came the Queen Elizabeth II. Currently in service are the Queen Mary II and this, the Queen Victoria, seen here on its way to the Mediterranean.
