Artist's Description

This White Rhino or wide-mouth rhino, Roger, lives at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Rehabilitation Centre in South Africa about 40 kms from world renowned Kruger National Park. Roger is an orphan and has two best friends: a one-horned buffalo cow and a female sheep (ewe). In Africa many threats face white rhinos as they are still hunted illegally for their horns which is sold on the black market and to a lesser extent as bushmeat. Rhino horn is made up of the same stuff (keratin) as our hair and fingernails and a turtles shell. Many poachers will poison an entire waterhole to kill one animal in particular but in consequence kills many non target animals also that drink from the waterhole (warthog, lions, antelope) or eat the dead already infected by the poison (hyaenas, vultures, maribu stork). Habitat loss is also a major threat to this noble creature. The White Rhinocerous is classed as endangered.
