Artist's Description

Here is another of my Creative Paintings, this time of Shrewsbury Castle and its garden. Shrewsbury Castle was originally built by Roger de Montgomery, a Norman knight, related to William the Conqueror, who put Roger in charge of keeping the Welsh in order, in this part of England. Previously, the Prince of Powys had ruled in these parts, and had his own castle on this spot. The Welsh were always a problem for the Normans (and the English), and burned Shrewsbury down, twice, possibly in revenge for the English hanging the last true Prince of Wales, just outside the Castle walls. All subsequent Princes of Wales, including our present Prince, Charles, have been Englishmen, sons of the current Monarch, foisted on the Principality, and unable, even, to speak Welsh. An insult to a proud nation. When the need for castles faded away, Shrewsbury Castle became a private residence, and it was eventually purchased by our local Horticultural Society, and given to the people of the town. Now, it houses a military museum, is in demand as a pretty Wedding venue, and makes a stunning backdrop for Open-air plays.
