Artist's Description

Another of my Creative Paintings, this time of Shrewsbury Abbey in Shropshire. The Abbey stands outside the loop of the River Severn, which almost turns the little town of Shrewsbury into an island, but the river has flooded the Abbey, to a depth of several feet, from time to time. The land was given to the Abbey by Roger de Montgomery, a Norman knight, related to William the Conquerer, and commanded by him to build a Castle here at Shrewsbury, and to keep out the Welsh, who used to rule in these parts. Roger also permitted the Abbey to build a Mill, powered by water, which brought the Abbey great wealth. Henry the Eighth destroyed the Abbey, but was persuaded to leave the Abbey Church unharmed, as he was told that it also served the townspeople. Shrewsbury Abbey became the fictional home of Cadfael, the detective monk created by Ellis Peters, who wrote some twenty detective stories featuring Cadfael, based on the Abbey & the old Town.
