Artist's Description

Roman Soldiers on parade in Exeter, Devon. These are all enthusiastic amateurs, suffering in their heavy armour, to entertain us with their presentation of how it was, under Roman occupation. The cloth they wear round their neck, to prevent chafing has become our modern-day tie. All day, these soldiers marched up & down, to the ancient cry of ‘Sinister, Dexter’. In reality, the Second Augustinian Legion, who occupied Exeter, and built a fort, and a wall to protect it, then marched to Caerleon, in South Wales, over 100 miles, in full armour, and built another fortress, and an amphitheatre, for war-like games. Hard men for hard times!
