Artist's Description

High Seas at Dawlish, Devon is another of my Creative Paintings. Dawlish faces due East, and is protected from the South-Westerly gales by the high cliffs of the coast, but, when the gale veers to the East, Dawlish is fully exposed. The railway which Brunel built along the coast here, from Exeter to Newton Abbot, is the most expensive section of rail in England to maintain, despite being protected by a solid granite wall. I used to live in a house there, which was built on the beach, in 1800, before road or railway were built, and when the waves hit the wall, the whole house shuddered. But the house still stood, after two hundred years! This view is from the wonderful little Boat Cove, where boats can be hired on calmer days, and I didn’t even get my feet wet.
