Artist's Description

This chap was photographed in Namibia and driving around Etosha National Park you would not think they are that rare as sightings are reasonably common if you look hard enough. However, Lions are persecuted and as their habitat has disappeared (some 80% of their original range has gone), so has their natural prey. Disease, revenge attacks, livestock protection and hunting have added to the toll. Now there are only about 25,000 to 35,000 left (from a population of 100,000 in the 1970’s) and less than 200 in some countries.
