Artist's Description

Brassica, ovum diaboli (Cauliflower, the devil’s egg).

A little known fact is that during the 1600s, cauliflower was called The Devil’s Egg. Eating it was believed to cause warts, bad breath, insanity and the ability to move backwards while appearing to walk forward (a move popularised centuries later by Michael Jackson). This illustration depicts the common belief at the time that a tiny devil lay dormant inside each cauliflower, waiting to infect the unsuspecting diner.
