At the Maori Cultural Center in Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand, there is a gift shop displaying native art, often carved wooden items. This elaborate box with it exquisite carved figures was a favorite.

I found a box similar to this at a local flea market (and bought it). My guess is this one has a much higher price tag! Well done!

Beautiful! Any idea what species of tree used?One has to at least try some wood carving to really appreciate the craft! I wasn’t too bad, but perhaps was better at cutting and gouging my fingers! Lol. :-)
petethe two most commonly used wood are from either the totara or kauri trees, each endemic to new Zealand. As a kid I also did quite a lot of carving with the BSA!
