Artist's Description

The site of the Government Dockyards begun by Governor John Hunter in 1797, later expanded by Lachlan Macquarie , were uncovered about 15 years ago in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Then began the battle over whether and how to memorialize the landmark, at about the time the Museum of Contemporary Art was considering an expansion directly over the site..
Finally in 2009, it was decided not to dig and create a visible tribute, but instead a Wiradjuri artist, Brooke Andrew, was commissioned to create another way. His contribution is this stripped, LED flashing arrow, pointing down to the ground, underneath which the dockyard ruins lay. The poem inscribed reads:

In the loch, blood stricken, time hidden lay lost, under this place of birth, under your mind lies a tunnel, under this stone, salty darkness, forgotten place of docks and ships.
