Shaded Corpse

I’m certain my shadow was alive once, long ago, back before the seas around me had grown. I knew it then when we’d sit and I’d cry because she was always there watching, listening, and understanding with a silent reply. But as my tears coursed paths through familiar terrain, ebbing and flowing only to come again, my shadow grew tired. She could only take so much.

Hell, credit goes where credits due and she lasted longer than anyone before or after. No matter how grand, how noble, how kingly you may be, a shadow always knows when its time to leave. A shadow understands that for some people the sun never again rises. A shadow knows that some people surround themselves with darkness, shades, grays, blacks, a seemingly infinite world of shadow, but in the end, beyond all the congratulatory cheer for a life lived as how others wanted, pushed past all the other seductive macabre colors which once seemed so appealing, there was only one shadow and she’s gone.

I’m certain, fairly positive, almost convinced that my shadow was alive once. I had dreams that traveled on a silent breeze. They reminded me of all that was with a simple kiss, blown on the wind from long ago, meant only for me in the form of a dandelion. It was my shadow, and she remembered, she loved, she cried silently, but in the end, as all great things must do, she left me for waters less murky, stars a little brighter, and a sun that would eventually rise. She would find happiness on a new road while mine rapidly aged.
I wish I could forget how the shadow before me is just a corpse, full of nothing, no whispers or stories of ages long past, hero’s not completely forgotten and mythical creatures not yet extinct, or anything more than a void to which I’ll never again be able to fill. I lost my shadow and would give anything to forget how she was alive once.
