LOCATION: Home
DESCRIPTION: Cat asleep in bedroom

Thought I would practice doing some ‘still life’ drawing; not that I’m saying it’s easy to draw using your finger on a computer laptop ‘touchpad’; but, it is still possible to try…

When you have a cat as a pet; it’s funny how they seem to become the ‘center’ of your whole entire world, sometimes; which also happens to be very good in terms of taking one out of the self.

The cat was all curled up into a cute furry ‘tight’ ball; with her tail pointing straight towards her head; and, her head down. I thought to myself I’ve got to have a go at capturing this position.

My cat she’s so incredibly beautiful; and, my drawing/concentration/not to mention eyesight…because I’m short signed…is so poor…that there’s no way in the world that I’m ever going to be able to capture her successfully; therefore, I simply do the next best thing…which is to ‘invent’ whatever I cannot, quite clearly, see…?!

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WHAT THE ARTIST THEMSELVES SEES/AND, WHAT THE VIEWER SEES

FROM THE VIEWERS POINT OF VIEW…

Maybe, the viewer sees a very ‘weak and simple’ drawing of a lazy cat asleep/in a room setting with various ‘shut’ drawers/and, a couple of paintings being seen hanging on the wall…again, all very badly drawn, indeed…so, you can’t make out any clear details of what the pictures inside of those paintings do actually represent?!

Furthermore, the drawing doesn’t seem to be very well composed; in that it shows only part of a room/and, not the whole room..

They may wonder to themselves…is this drawing either ‘real’/or else, is it purely ‘imaginary’?

FROM THE ARTISTS POINT OF VIEW…

For the record, this is a ‘real life documentary’ type of drawing; there is nothing false/imaginary/or, staged about it; it just quite simply aims to record exactly ‘what is’; though, I will admit the ‘quality’ of the drawing is extremely ‘bad’; which, of course, is due to my own lack of drawing ability/skill.

Someone in the know, can see both what the drawing DOES contain/as well as, seeing ALL that the drawing itself does NOT contain.

I see a ‘real’ room; filled with ‘real’ furniture.

I know exactly what’s being contained inside of each of these ‘shut’ drawers.

I know that, at least, one of these top draws does contain old ‘videos’/etc.

I also know what lay on top of the drawers…things which I did not choose to include/depict.

The nearside rightmost draw is the one closest to my bed head. In there I keep pens/papers; so that I can do a really ‘quick sketch’ any time I please.

I see a ‘real’ situation; that was ongoing, at the particular point in time; where my black cat…a she…was being seen sleeping in front of the drawers. I also know that I went and brought her from the pet shop when she was just a few months old kitten; now, she’s been living with me and my family for over a year; she had 1 set of kittens which I gave away to ‘new’ owners; she’s been neutered; fully recovered from her operation; and, also, remains in good health.

Furthermore, I know, that it was winter, and, freezing cold; and, directly off to the left side…outside of the drawing…is a Calor gas lamp which was kept turned on; thus, the room was both warm and cosy; which, of course, encouraged the cat to go to sleep.

I know too that the paintings on the wall; are a series of Terrence Kelly oil paintings; mixture of both landscape/seascape. Here we can only see the 2 bottommost paintings; but, in fact, there are 6 each hung vertically on top of one another; extending going right up from ground to ceiling.

I also realize that this was a fairly quiet time in my life; with not a lot of serious crisis going on.

The viewer can see only 1 side of the room; whereas, me, I can see…inside of my minds eye…all 4 sides of the room…going from top down to bottom. I can see the bed/the sheets/the windows/curtains/mirrors/etc.

So, for somebody else, namely, the viewer; this very ‘weak and simple’ drawing may mean little or nothing to them…?!. But, to me, that actually drew it, it serves to remind me of a lot.

TIME VS MEMORY

In time, a hour…the cat might have moved from out of it’s sleeping position; maybe, gone to go and feed/drink..

In a weeks time, I might have decided to change all of the furniture around; switching everything into different positions.

In 6 months time/to 1 year, I could have either given away/auctioned off/sold all of my Terrence Kelly paintings.

In 5 years time, I might have decided to throw out all of the ‘old’ furniture, and, replace it by buying something ‘new’. The ‘old’ furniture might be very quickly forgotten…???

In 10 years time, persons/animals who were living with me inside of the same house; might be dead; then, I will have nothing left to remember them by; but, just this ‘one’ same drawing.

CONCLUSION

That’s why it’s a good thing that artists should keep ‘picture diaries’ to remind themselves/and, record all that went on before; it’s analogical to keeping ‘written diaries’.

Even in written diaries; one doesn’t necessarily include absolutely everything and more…; but, instead, one very carefully selects. ;-)
