Slaughterhouse New Zealand

In 2002 our government statistics department records that we human beings in New Zealand killed 35 and a half million other mammals for profit, and that excludes the birds and fish also killed for profit. New Zealand has a human population of just over 4 million. Therefore we humans killed over 8 times our own number of other mammals in ONE YEAR for money and greed in this fair land of ours.

We know we could easily and more healthily feed solely on plant based food, but we continue to kill and destroy other beings, because we feel like it. We indulge in a constant fantasy that those other beings we kill are not like us-they cannot feel, they cannot know, they are there for our use. We indulge in mental subterfuges by believing that it is ok to kill one species, but not another.-eg that whales and dolphins are somehow more like us, and so should be protected, but fish can be slaughtered indiscriminately. We package and dismiss the pain and suffering we cause in bright coloured boxes of flesh.

Agri-business has one outcome; the “bottom line”. It is not interested in health, well-being, the environment, the sanctity of all beings and the minimisation of suffering; it simply wants more money.

The image we create of ourselves in this land; environmental friendly, respecting of whales and dolphins, is a farce and a tragedy. Our nation of cat and dog-lovers which expresses horror at those cultures who eat them, proportionately likely kills more beings per human population than any other country in the world. We slaughter for profit. Everyday, we trade the flesh of animals who once lived and breathed, had feelings and awareness, and on whom we inflict terror and suffering for other’s money.

New Zealand is a house of slaughter; the blood of millions of animals just like us flow into our once pristine waters every day. The smell of burning flesh from the abbatoir haunts every town and city in this land.

Those who kill for pleasure are a supreme example of our hypocrisy; the so called “hunters” in our society. They are nothing more than sadistic killers of those who are defenseless against them, wreaking havoc on our environment with their four wheel drives and guns. Who weave simplistic stories of saving our environment through the killing of deer, opossums and other “noxious” animals, ignoring the reality that it is human beings who have destroyed much of our environment. By that same logic are we not then “noxious animals” too to be destroyed?

How unsurprising then, that we live in a violent society; where everyone senses, but does not name, the hypocrisy that says it is ok to kill any other species except our own.
