Crested Cranes: Balearica regulorum
Sub species East African B. r. gibbericeps.
DSC_0466.

New Years Day on the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania. We drove for hours to catch glimpses of a leopard, her cub and the vulture she had caught all in the one tree.

On our way back to the lodge we were fortunate enough to see these two crested cranes catching the afternoon light on the top of a spiny Acacia tree. They preened and groomed each other for some time, their heads seldom comming up together.

The Crane has a breeding display involving dancing, bowing, and jumping. It has a booming call which involves inflation of the red gular sac. It also makes a honking sound quite different from the trumpeting of other crane species.

What a wonderful way to start the year.
