Artist's Description

Constructed in 1820 as the Salsibury Female Academy, this home was purchased in 1859 by Dr. Josephus W. Hall, who added a new entrance and the double veranda with the wrought iron work. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Hall was appointed surgeon at the nearby Salisbury Prision Camp. Two years later, the Confederacy built a general hospital to serve wounded soldiers who arrived daily by railroad. In addition to his duties at the prison, Hall served at this new hospital as well as other military hospitals.
After the war, Hall received a pardon and returned to his interests of agriculture and real estate. He died in 1873, but the house remained in the Hall family until its purchase by the Historic Salisbury Foundation in 1972.
