Artist's Description

This monument erected by the state of Maine in memory of Union soldiers from the state who were captives at the Salisbury Prison stands guard in the Salisbury National Cemetery (Salisbury, NC). The open ground behind the monument and to its right is where 18 trenches were dug to bury approximately 11,000 Union prisoners who died at the Salisbury Prison during the prison’s operation (1861-1865). The majority of these deaths occurred during 1864.
