Artist's Description

This is about the lack of trust we have in life due to authority figures who have not been transparent with us. I have been stimulated to write this due to an issue I am having with Redbubble. A few years ago I wrote something about the Bill Henson and Kevin Rudd dispute. It was titled child prostitution and it received an enormous amount of comments from a range of viewpoints.

About 2 weeks ago I went to my redbubble page to review both what I had written and the comments of others. I found that the piece was no longer there. I tried to find a phone number for redbubble only to find that there is no longer one provided. I have since sent 2 emails to their support section asking where the writing has gone.

When I initially found the piece missing I felt extreme anger. As per usual I have delved into my emotions on the matter to find what this incident has touched on. I believe that the main source of my reaction is the betrayal I feel from whoever directed the writing to be removed. I have received no notification that redbubble had any issue with what was written and as yet have had no response from either email.

I enjoy redbubble immensly but do feel disappointed that they have not been transparent in this situation. I put tremendous passion and effort into all my creative works and trust that redbubble would honour such trust. I am writng this in the hope that someone at redbubble will realise the responsibility they have to make transparent communication a major priority in their business.

I also see that the level of my anger in this situation is mirrored in so many scenarios in society. So many of us feel let down by people and groups in positions of power. I believe it should be every human’s right to expect to be treated fairly and honestly especially by trusted people and groups.

As it is few if any humans get through life without having their trust abused. I believe that this starts with our parents and becomes a cycle that we all pass on. It seems to be an accepted part of human nature that when we are under pressure that communication can be rightly avoided or manipulated. Further for many of us when we make a mistake or feel vulnerable it is easier to avoid being honest and open in our communication.

If parents and other authority figures treated their children and the people they are responsible for with full integrity and honesty I believe that society would be far less destructive. I am angry with redbubble but also must take responsibility for my anger. Further believe that I and most others hold some hurt from childhood betrayal. However once we are adults we can choose to not pass on the hurt by making clear and direct communication a priority.
