Artist's Description

When you think it’s impossible to work with smaller stencils, have a look at this map….. I did most of the stencilling and painting of this. I can’t remember how long it took me to complete, but it was a labour of love!

This is an example of the work I used to do as a young man.
I worked for a printing company and they used to print limited edition books that were hand painted using stencils. They would only print a few as the work was extensive and this made the books quite valuable.
My job was to cut out the stencils required for each layer of paint, and work out the colours. Some of the stencils were extremely small and the skill required was one of immense patience and a steady hand.
Each stencil represented a colour. Sometimes the colours were superimposed in a strict order to reach a final tint. For the colours to blend into each other (such as on the horses), some stencils were overlapped at just the right place.
The size of this picture is A2.
