John Berger says in “ways of seeing” that: "It is seeing that establishes our place in the surrounding world (1972: 9). In relation to this woman have to continually watch themselves for it is man who is the surveyor of woman and woman has to control the impression she portrays to be accepted and to be successful in society. Berger (1972:46) explains this as follows:

how she appears to others, and ultimately how she appears to men, is of crucial importance for what is normally thought of as the success of her life. Her own sense of being in her is supplanted by a sense of being appreciated as herself by another.

Woman therefore has to consider both the surveyor and the surveyed as distinct elements of her identity as a woman. Berger explains that this has been the cost of woman’s self being split in two (Berger 1972:46).
