THE KILLING GROUNDS

I Close my eyes,I hear the cannons roar
I’m back once more in the trenches of the 14 / 18 war
I look around and I can see my comrades standing there
In the grey light of dawn, with battle gear on, ready to fight the foe
Saying their prayers, their last farewells, ready to go over the top
Passchendaele, The Somme, they’ve seen it all, these glorious friends of mine
Joe, Tom, and Bill, I remember them still
In the quiet of the night, when stars were bright and snipers moon is high
I lie in my bed and wish I were dead, in the hellish killing grounds
Yet life was good, well I suppose as good as it gets, for one the likes of me
Who played he was dead, as brave comrades bled, on the hellish killing grounds
Oh how I’ve prayed, to be struck down in the night
By bullet, bayonet, or bomb
Yet I am still here, I still live in fear of the hellish killing grounds
Now that I’m old, I think back with a sigh,to Bill, to Tom. and Joe
I miss them you know, more than you’ll ever know
For they lie where they fell ,among the mud and the shells
Of the hellish killing grounds
I’m still here, I still live in fear of the hellish killing grounds
