My winters walk

I took my winters walk to day

The fields where white the skies were grey
The trees were stark against the sky
No songbird in the heavens high
The cold wind blew the leaves around
Off the trees and frozen ground
The flurries of snow from leaden sky
Borne on the wind like a last goodbye
The haunting call of winters breath
Sighing gently from her chest
The icy touch of some dark hand
To freeze the waters of the land
The ruined keep upon the hill
The aching cold that saps the will
That seems to chill your very heart
Like lonely lover about to part
I pull my coat around me tight
Head bowed hands tucked in pocket out of sight
Trudging on through snow fields deep
Heading home by ruined keep
Across the bridge by frozen stream
Travelling on as if in dream
I see the distant glow of light
My humble home is now in sight
