Thoughts recalled

The warrm black smoke, rises up ma Grannies lum
O’er the roofs, across the toon
O’er the shipyerds, and the river Clyde
Curling gently tae the sky
O’er the factories, like a gentle sigh
The grate is cauld, the fires gone oot
The ashes grey, wae black black , soot
Ma Grannies sitting in her chair
Long black dress, wae silver hair
She’s got the poker in her haun
Jabbing at the long deid coals
She shouts tae Annie, tae get up fur work
She starts at Singers, at quarter tae eight
She’ll huv taeĀ  rush, or she’ll be late
Ma Granny tries tae light the gas
Wae a bit o’ paper fae last nights Times
Success at last, the warm blue flame flickers
Under the auld black kettle on the hob
Tea;ll soon be ready jist the joab
Am lying in ma bed, am staying wae ma Granny
Fur a week or twa, ma Mither in hospital
Ma Faithers away in the navy
Ma sisters are away as well,
A think their evacuated fur the War
Owe’r house got bombed the ither night
Me an ma Mither had tae sleep in the shelter in Bruce St,
It wis fu’ o’ people fae owe’r street, all cowering in fear
Old wimmen and men, young wimmen and weans
A’ the young men aff tae War
Fighting Hitler, so faur away
The good auld days, that will be right
A canny forget the feeling o’ dread
While lying in ma humble bed
Tae hear the drone o’ distant planes
Is it wan o’ there’s, or is it oor’s
