Bayeux is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy in northwestern France.Bayeux is the home of the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. The city was known as Augustodurum in the Roman Empire. It means the durum (Celtic word duro- ‘door’, ‘gate’, Welsh dor, Breton dor ‘door’, ‘gate’) dedicated to Augustus, Roman Emperor. The Celtic word duron, Latinised in durum was probably used to translate the Latin word forum. In the Late Empire it took the name of the Celtic tribe who lived here : the Bodiocassi, Latinized in Bajocassi, Bajocasses, and this word explains the place-names Bayeux and Bessin. Bodiocassi has been compared with Old Irish Buidechass ‘with blond locks’

Half-timbered houses these beautiful buildings are found all over Normandy and Brittany, the styles differing slightly from one location to the next. Depending on which town they are found in, these buildings may have wonderful carvings on the timbers themselves, or attached to them. One such building in Bayeux is the Grand Argouges Residence, which has carvings of the Virgin Mary and assorted saints all over its frontage.
