In Nature

The first rain of spring
drizzles overhead
onto an arrangement of daisies beside me.
The delicate sound of birds
flying over my head as they
come home
from their southern vacation.

I look out into an open field
watching the effervescent wildlife
mingle with each other
among the swaying grass.

The summer heat begins to mask
what used to be spring weather,
as I watch the grass of the open field
grow longer and greener within its environment.

Summer becomes my blanket
warming me throughout and
protecting me from the inevitable cold,
wintry nights.

But my blanket is snatched from me,
opening my eyes to the vibrant colours of red, yellow and orange
sprawled on the ground of that grassy field
and on the branches of that single tree.
I feel the cold slowly approaching.

I watch as the critters in the field
prepare themselves for their wintry sleep
by gathering resources
for the long, dreadful season.

Winter becomes my death
when it kills what I have inside me.
I long for my blanket
of heat
and for life to appear.
For now I sleep.

The sun appears
melting this cold death from my body
taking me back to what I once knew
in nature.
